Help London Daily Photo Raise £10,000 for Breast Cancer Care
Travelers tend to be the kind of people who like doing good things for the world, so we think you’ll like this opportunity to do good. Our friend Ham, a London resident who does a London Daily Photo site, is raising money for the Breast Cancer Care charity. £25 congestion charge for larger cars in London
The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, today announced plans to start charging cars with higher CO2 emissions £25 a day to drive into central London’s Congestion Zone, where the charge is currently £8 per day.
Its being presented as a part of a scheme to tackle global warming but the cynics would say it’s just a chance for the old school socialist mayor to hit the well off or middle class with a new tax for choosing to drive a vehicle with an engine bigger than a washing machine’s.
The new charge will be imposed on vehicles that are classed as VED(Vehicle Excise Duty) Band G.

Talking CCTV comes to London
Britain is the world leader when it comes to CCTV with more cameras filming its citizens going about their every day business than anywhere else. Now Barking and Dagenham in east London has become the first borough in the capital to introduce talking CCTV.
They’ve spent £25,000 fitting loudspeakers to existing cameras and will be used by the operators in the council’s cctv control room. They say the aim of the talking cameras is to fight crime, litter and antisocial behaviour,

Chinese New Year in London
2008 is the Year of the Rat in the Chinese calendar and this Sunday 10 February London’s Chinese community will be celebrating their New Year with a parade and festival in central London.
The events are organized by the London Chinatown Chinese Association and begin with a two hour parade that features hundreds on dragon and lion dancers and performers, starting on the Strand then heading up Charing Cross Road before turning west on Shaftesbury Avenue and finishing at Rupert street on the north side of Chinatown.

New baggage tracking system on trial at Heathrow
Heathrow Airport and airlines such as British Airways have had a very bad press in the last year or so when it comes to losing passengers baggage. Handing over your suitcase with your holiday essentials in it at check-in turned into a game of chance as to whether you got it back at the other end of your journey.
Now Emirates Airlines are trialling a system called RFID (radio frequency identification) which puts a tiny chip into the regular bar code tags that get attached to any checked in luggage

Vanity Fair Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery
London’s National Portrait Gallery has just opened a new exhibition called Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008. Its an exhibition that features 150 classic portraits that have appeared in the magazine over the last 95 years.
During that period Vanity Fair has commissioned some of the world’s most well known photographers including Man Ray, Cecil Beaton, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino and Herb Ritts to take their shots of subjects

London Film Premieres in February
London’s experiencing some sunny Spring like weather at the moment, excellent conditions if you fancy getting along to a film premiere and catching the stars as they work the crowds. Here’s a look at some of the films making their UK debut in the next couple of weeks.
11 February - Rambo Twenty years after taking the war to the Soviets in Afghanistan John Rambo is back kicking ass, this time that belonging to the military dictatorship in Burma. Sylvester Stallone obviously feels comfortable taking on the physical roles again that made his name and with the current score Rocky VI - Rambo IV we can probably expect the one man army to get another outing. This premiere is at the Vue Cinema in Leicester Square and Stallone is in town.

Switched on London
Office blocks left with all their lights on over night has become a hot issue with environmentalists, especially in London where the financial distrcits in the City of London and Canary Wharf continually adding new offices.
This week the second Switched on London event will be lighting up famous landmarks and buildings in the area roughly between London Bridge and Tower Bridge to show how environmentally friendly and sustainable lighting can be used to light up major buildings and why its important to for cities to be lit even if people are worried about CO2 emissions.
The project runs from 7-14 February and brings teams of leading lighting designers
