Tower of London Sign Language Tours

tower1.jpgThe Tower of London is running a programme of tours this year where British Sign Langauge interpreters will accompany the Tower’s famous Yeoman Warders, known as Beefeaters, as they guide visitors around.

The interpreters will pass on what the Beefeater is saying to the deaf and hearing impaired on during the Ceremony of the Keys and the regular Yeoman Warder guided tour. Sign language tours are included in the general admission price but because they’re happening on set dates they need to be pre-booked.

St Patrick’s Day London 2008

stpats.jpgLondon’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations take place this Sunday 16 March with a range of events taking place at central London locations including Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Covent Garden.

A main part of the day is the St Patrick’s Day Parade featuring marching bands, floats, costume characters, stilt walkers and street theatre, along with members of the public who sign up on the parade website to march behind one of 32 giant Irish county flags. The parade starts at Hyde Park Corner then makes its way along Piccadilly to Piccadilly Circus,

La Dolce Vita

dolce.jpgThis week London’s Grand Hall Olympia hosts the four day Italian lifestyle show La Dolce Vita with Viva Italia, an event which highlights Italy’s famous food and wine, fashion and style as well as spotlighting travel to the country and the possibilities in buying property there.

La Dolce Vita runs from 13-16 March and features well over one hundred exhibitor stands along with a programme of entertainment that includes opera, jazz, Italian rock music, talks from food writers and language lessons among other things.

Proud 2 B Pat

ptbp1.jpgTied in with London’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations this Sunday, 16 March, a world record attempt will be made in Trafalgar Square. Proud 2 B Pat will raise funds for Great Ormond Street children’s hospital by gathering the largest number of people with the same name in one place, in the case Patrick’s and Pats.

Anyone with that name is invited to turn up between noon and 3pm and asked to bring a birth certificate or passport to verify they really are a Patrick. Guinness World Records will need

Waiting for the Light

noton.jpgThe Oxo Tower Wharf’s gallery@oxo has a new photographic exhibition starting a short run this week entitled Waiting for the Light: Photography by David Noton capturing the world’s most beautiful places.

It’s on from 14-30 March 2008 and features photos taken over the last 25 years by David Noton, one of Britain’s leading landscape and travel photographers. The exhibition is free to enter and compliments the release of David Noton’s new book of the same name.

Who’s moving where at Heathrow

Petrol prices

petrol.jpgVisitors to Britain who are planning on renting a car and driving during their visit may want to reconsider their options as the price of petrol has skyrocketed 20% in the last year as highlighted in a story in the Daily Mail.

The average price of a gallon of petrol in the UK is now £4.80 (US$9.65) while a gallon of diesel costs a staggering £5.30. People on a trip here for the first time may be caught out by petrol being sold at the pumps by the litre where the cost is around £1.06 at the moment,
