General advice for flying into London

London might be a city in what seems like a pretty small country, but it is home to one of the busiest and largest international airports on earth. And just for good measure, there are a few other airports in and around London in addition to the big one. What this means for you is that getting a flight to London is absolutely no problem whatsoever. Getting a good deal on airfare to London, however, is another matter.

Airfare is generally the biggest item in your travel budget, but there are ways to spend less on your airfare - which leaves you more money for the rest of your vacation. Getting cheap airfare to London, like any other popular destination, just takes a little bit of research and savvy. Here are our tips for avoiding paying a fortune for your airline ticket:

  1. Visit London during the low season - Unless the only reason you are going to London is to lie in the sun in Hyde Park, you would be well advised to plan your London holiday for the off season. The high season is typically late Spring through early Autumn, so if you go during January or February you will likely save quite a bit of money - sometimes up to half of a summertime fare. Visiting museums in rainy weather is the same as visiting in sunny weather, except that you probably will not be fighting as many crowds, either.
  2. Find out which airlines use London airports as a hub - Sometimes knowing what airlines fly most frequently in and out of a given airport can help you save money. If those airlines operate lots of daily flights, they might offer special deals or discounts occasionally. This is not always the case, but it is worth looking into. London Heathrow is a hub for several airlines, including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways and bmi. London’s Gatwick Airport is also used by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways, and Stansted Airport is a hub for some of Europe’s big budget airlines like Ryanair, Air Berlin and easyJet.
  3. Fly into a different city - If you are searching every London airport and airline and still coming up with prices that seem too high to you, you might see if you could save money by flying into another nearby airport (in Paris or Amsterdam, for instance). If you find a great deal on a flight into another European city you can then book a separate ticket on one of Europe’s many budget carriers (like easyJet, Ryanair or Flybe) for the short flight to London, or hop on the Eurostar. This will take a bit more planning on your part, but if it can save you enough money it could be worth it.
  4. Schedule your flights for midweek - Weekend travel days tend to be some of the busiest because they are popular with leisure travelers. And if they are busy and airlines know every seat will be full, they are less inclined to offer lower prices - they simply do not need to. Mondays are also busy travel days, but this time it is because of business travelers. So if you can schedule your flight to London for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday you will stand a better chance of getting cheap airfare.

As mentioned, airfare to London is likely going to be the biggest piece of your travel budget, but there is no reason you need to pay more than is necessary. Not everyone on the same plane will have paid the same price for their ticket, and by using our tips here and our airfare search engine on this page you can be assured that you are not paying the highest prices. And all that money you save will be very useful when you visit London.
