Being the third busiest airport in London and also in the United Kingdom, London Stansted Airport (code: STN) is a major player, especially among charter and the new breed of low-cost airlines. It’s smaller than Heathrow and Gatwick, but it’s still quite easy finding cheap flights into London Stansted due to the competition among the discount airlines in particular. Ryanair uses Stansted as their main London base, so they will usually be your best bet, although competitors do often match or even beat their prices.

Being a bit out of the city, Stansted isn’t as easy to get into London from, but it does have an express train to Liverpool Street Station in London, so if you can save more than a little bit of money flying into Stansted it can be worth it. The flights into Stansted tend to be regional and priced competitively. You should also use the code LON to check flights into all London airports at once, but if you are coming from another European city and you don’t mind using a smaller airport then Stansted will often have the lowest airfares.

Flights from North America

Aside from American Airlines sometimes flying from New York City into Stansted there is no service from North America at all. You’ll be limited to Heathrow and Gatwick if the New York City flight doesn’t work out.

Flights from Europe

It’s extremely easy to find cheap airfare into Stansted from nearly any European city of any size, as well as other cities in the UK and Ireland. Since much of this traffic is dominated by the discount carriers like Ryanair, you’ll usually have to start from another second-tier airport. When comparing prices for your journey make sure you add in the cost of transportation to and from where you are going in the cities because sometimes this extra expense makes what looks like a cheap fare into something more expensive and time consuming anyway.

Flight from Asia

Aside from flights from Istanbul on the border and from Tel Aviv, you’ll not find much scheduled service from Asia into Stansted. From there you are best off trying Heathrow or Gatwick, or using the LON code in the search box above to check them all at the same time.
