British Airways Contact Information
A lot of people seem to be having problems with British Airways this summer, specifically with bags being mislaid or lost in transit when travelling through Heathrow. It can be hard work trying to track them down and get help from the relevant people. Here are some numbers and addresses you might need if your bags don’t turn up at your destination.

Trans Atlantic air fares set for a dog dogfight
The headline on tonights London Evening Standard was £7 flights to America on Ryanair. This follows yesterday’s report on budget airline Zoom starting to fly from Gatwick to JFK in June for £129 one way.
Ryanair’s owner Michael O’Leary said his airline, which is one of the big players in the discount flight market in Europe, wants to fly to six east coast US airports within the next couple of years and the cheapest tickets would be $12.

Free Flights from the UK
Ryanair are advertising a whole load of free flights from the UK, exclusive of air taxes, on their website. They’re good for travel up to 30 June 07 but the sale ends at midnight tonight.
That’s the good news but Ryanair are also in the news for the amount of money they make charging people for anything over 10kg of luggage on their flights. They’re making record profits, up to £660,000 per day and they justify the baggage charges by saying passengers have been pre-warned and have a choice to make. Their deputy CEO Michael Cawley says ‘this is an optional charge as part of our campaign to persuade people that they do not need to take the kitchen sink with them’.

Foggy London update
The fog is continuing to have an influence on flights in and out of the UK as one of the busiest travel weekends of the year kicks in. I think most of the south east had fog this morning, here in north London the visibility was about 200-300 yards by mid-morning.
British Airways latest bulletin says they’ve cancelled all UK domestic services, all Paris services (excluding BA0326), all Brussels services (excluding BA0400).

London Airports
Travelling to a new city for the first time can be a little confusing if you’re not too sure where the airport you’re landing at is in relation to the city itself.
London is the biggest city in Europe and five airports serve the people travelling to and from it. Heathrow and Gatwick are the two principle long haul hubs, Stansted and Luton handle mainly low cost European and package holiday flights and City Airport serves UK domestic and western Europe short haul flights.

London airports flight data
If you’re moving to the London area BAA(British Airports Authority) have launched a new service that let’s you see the amount of aircraft activity over the place you’re moving to, giving an idea of how noisy it may be.
The WebTrak online service gives the details of flights from the main London airports including Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick. Go on to one of these sites, click Track Historical Flights, select the time and the day you want and they’ll be a map of the area around these airports that you can zoom in and out of. Aircraft and their fight paths will be shown crossing the map, red aircraft are arriving, green are departing and orange coloured aircraft are heading to other airports.

British Airways getting greedy
It sounds like British Airways executives have been at the in-flight drinks trolley after reading their new baggage policy for the airline. Starting next Tuesday 13 February, they’re going to charge extra if passengers check in more than one bag irrespective of whether the two bags weigh less than the baggage allowance.
They’ve also gone nuts with the pricing of these charges, £240 for an extra bag on a long haul flight, £120 for one on a short international flight and £60 on domestic flights.

British Airways trying to sort its problems
Its not a great week for British Airways or some of their customers, they still have tons of bags left at Heathrow from the Christmas chaos and the cabin crew strike is still on the cards.
The baggage not returned to its owners is unmarked and was left behind due to disruption by equipment failure and then fog in December. Amazingly BA has a 45 day trace period where they try and reunite the bags with the right passenger, if they can’t after that period they auction off the bag. I know people will be compensated but it still seems a bit harsh to flog someone’s personal belongings.

Flights cancelled at Heathrow
British Airways are cancelling all domestic flights from Heathrow tomorrow because of expected heavy fog. Apparently today 180 flights from Heathrow had to be cancelled and 223 in the UK altogether, which is strange because I was in central London today and the sky was clear as a bell.
The weather in London has definitely turned colder with quite hard frosts the last few mornings, but I haven’t seen any fog yet.
