London Sports

English folk are mad about sports and you’ll find plenty of interesting stories from the field of play here.

Wimbledon

wimbledon1.thumbnail.jpgThe Wimbledon Tennis Championships played on the famous grass courts of the All England Club in southwest London are one of the highlights of the sporting year in Britain and probably the most coverted titles to win for any tennis player.

The tournament at Wimbledon lasts for two weeks, this year from 23 June-6 July 2008, with the very best players in the world competing in mens and womens singles, doubles, mixed doubles and junior events. There are nineteen courts in use at Wimbledon allowing fans a great chance to see some action. The two main show courts are Centre Court which seats 14,000 and No.1 Court which seats 11,000.

London to stage NFL games from 2008-10

superbowl.thumbnail.jpgThe NFL has announced that London will host a regular season game in each of the next three years with the 2008 game being the New Orleans Saints v San Diego Chargers taking place at Wembley Stadium on 26 October.

Last October Wembley staged the first regular season NFL game outside of North America when the New York Giants played the Miami Dolphins and that game sold out in record time so there’s clearly a market for the sport in the UK. Tickets aren’t yet available for this autumn’s game but anyone interested in buying one should register on the NFLUK website.

London weekend football

brawl1.thumbnail.jpgIt’s another important football weekend with this week’s big game taking place at the Emirates Stadium where Premiership leaders Arsenal take on the oligarch’s plaything aka Chelsea on Sunday. Arsenal are over due a victory against Abramovich’s boys but injuries made the possibility look unlikely. Now it seems key players Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie might be fit to play which will definitely help the Gunners chances.

As you would expect that game’s sold out but here are some others in London this weekend that you might get tickets for.

Its going to be an 80,000 seater although once the games have finished 55,000 will be removed and the stadium will retain only 25,000 seats as an athletics venue and possibly one for a rugby club or lower league football club, Leyton Orient being the obvious choice.

The stadium is design by architects HOK Sport whose previous projects include

Brazil to play Sweden at the Emirates

fan1.thumbnail.jpgBrazil are returning to London to play Sweden in a friendly football international on Wednesday 26th March 2008 with the game taking place at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. This will be the third year in a row that the Brazilian national team have played at the Emirates, they beat Argentina 3-0 there in September 2006 and lost 2-0 to Portugal in February 2007.

I went to both matches which were sellouts

The NFL Explained

miami.thumbnail.jpgThe ground-breaking first regular season NFL game outside of North America takes place at London’s Wembley Stadium on Sunday and it’ll be interesting to see how much attention it draws from the British media and casual sports fan. Not a great deal would be my guess, even though the game’s a sellout and there are a lot of people in the UK, myself included, who love the NFL and American Foootball.

A lot of the press coverage I’ve read this week keeps harping back to the 1980s and exhibition games teams played over here, and Wiiliam ‘Refrigerator’ Perry still seems the only player many sports journalists have heard of. The Miami Dolphins’ cheerleaders have been doing their bit to raise awareness, posing at locations around town and even performing at halftime
