English folk are mad about sports and you’ll find plenty of interesting stories from the field of play here.
Twickenham rugby stadium hosts the annual Middlesex Rugby Sevens tournament this coming Saturday 18 August. Rugby Union is a game played between teams of 15 players over 80 minutes, Sevens as the name suggests is played by teams of seven with games lasting between 14-20 minutes although they are still played on the full size pitch. This means they’re all action requiring the players to have stamina, lots of speed and good ball handling skills.
Sevens tournaments take place all over the world and are very popular with the two-day Hong Kong Sevens probably being the most famous.
The new football season starts this weekend and the sports press can concentrate on something other than whether Beckham’s problem with his big toe/ankle/new haircut will stop him walking down another red carpet. Football fans will be filled with hope for a good season, at least until Monday, but the return of the Premiership and football is not the only big sporting contest in London this weekend.
The Third Test in cricket between England and India began today at the Oval

I went along to the Emirates Stadium this afternoon for the second day of the Emirates Cup pre-season competition featuring Arsenal, Inter Milan, Valencia and Paris Saint Germain.
A huge crowd turned out in London this afternoon to line the route of the Tour de France Prologue. In a lot of places I saw it was four and five deep which meant those at the back only got a glimpse of the riders speeding past. I eventually got a pretty good spot by climbing up between the raised pillars of one of the archs at Hyde Park Corner. The weather obliged after all the rain of the last couple of weeks and it was a sunny and warm day. Below are some photos from around the Prologue course.
The UK Mobile Phone Throwing Championships take place in west London this Sunday 12 August, your chance to start next week as a national champion as these championships are open to anyone who’s currently living in the UK.

Now that SkySports and Setanta have picked the first round of Premiership games they want to televise live this season the schedule has been rearranged and shouldn’t be effected by Cup games until the New Year, although after November the tv companies will probably move some more Premiership games to times that suit them. If you’re thinking of trying to catch a game this season here are the London clubs home Premiership fixtures as they now stand.
The Tour De France Opening Ceremony drew a big crowd to London’s Trafalgar Square this evening, the rain even held off which must be a good omen and around half a million people are expected to watch tomorrow’s Prologue through the centre of town which starts at 3pm.
Fans can get a reminder of past classic Tours over the weekend at a photographic exhibition taking place at County Hall on the South Bank near the London Eye.
