London Cricket
The game England is famous for and, in recent years, famously bad at it.
Busy sporting weekend in London
The new football season starts this weekend and the sports press can concentrate on something other than whether Beckham’s problem with his big toe/ankle/new haircut will stop him walking down another red carpet. Football fans will be filled with hope for a good season, at least until Monday, but the return of the Premiership and football is not the only big sporting contest in London this weekend.

England on the brink Down Under
Australia look like they could regain The Ashes by Sunday, they’re 2-0 in the five Test series and are on well on top in this current Third Test in Perth. England just haven’t shown up in this Ashes series and the thousands of England fans who are heading to Sydney for the Boxing Day Test will feel like they’ve arrived at a party that’s already finished.
How different it all was in the summer of 2005. Here’s a clip from the Trafalgar Square victory celebration to remind the fans of what the glory days were like.

Australia v England - The Ashes 2006
The cricket Ashes start tomorrow night UK time(Thursday morning Australian time) at the Gabba in Brisbane with the First Test between England and Australia. England went mad when the cricket team won the Ashes for the first time in 18 years in the summer of 2005, now its Australia’s turn to get hyped up for the five Test series. It’s going to be the lead item on news bulletins, sports pages and probably newspaper front pages over the coming days, above is an Aussie promo showing the Poms …

Who wants to be Magnum
England’s cricketers who are touring Pakistan at the moment, are all growing moustache’s to keep up team morale.
They better be careful or they could end up looking like those two Aussie Village People rejects Merv Hughes and David Boon.
I like this little history of the Australian cricket team’s drinking record travelling to and from overseas tours. Boon is the current record holder, 52 cans of beer on the 1989 Sydney-London leg.

International cricket in London this summer
The England cricket team have a chance to get back to winning ways this week after a disastrous winter tour of Australia and an equally poor showing at the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean in March. On Thursday, 17 May, England start their summer programme of international games with the first of four five day Test Matches against the West Indies at Lord’s in West London.

Stadium tours in London
There’s a lot of sport that goes on in London throughout the year and many of the major venues offer stadium tours. I should probably include the Circus Tavern in Purfleet after Monday’s epic world championship final between Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld, one of the greatest matches in darts history, but here are some of the main outdoor arenas you can visit.
The Emirates Stadium Home of the mighty Arsenal since last summer and the newest stadium in the Premiership, tours of the Emirates are available daily depending on the club’s schedule of games.

Cricket’s not that difficult
The Ashes are just about to get underway and Freddy Flintoff’s secret weapon for victory was getting a few batting tips off the man of the moment, Borat Sagdiyev.

Th Ashes
London was packed out today with thousands of fans cheering the England cricket team through town to Trafalgar Square, after they regained The Ashes with yesterday’s deciding Test against Australia.
I don’t think anyone can remember cricket being on such a high in this country and there’s probably a lot of reasons. First, England have come up with a really good team with some outstanding individual players and they’ve managed to beat the deadliest enemy, Australia, in a series for the first time in nineteen years. This is on the back of series wins in South Africa and the West Indies.
The 20Twenty competition has brought a whole new audience to the game, with matches lasting under three hours on a summer’s evening, matches between counties have been sellouts, unheard of.
And the players themselves seem real down to earth guys. They had a big night out celebrating last night and looking at the state of them today you could tell most hadn’t been to sleep and were still half-pissed, especially Flintoff who slurred his way through a bunch of tv interviews.
