London Cricket

The game England is famous for and, in recent years, famously bad at it.

Advantage England

The end of day two of the 4th Test and the Aussies are wobbling again.
England racked up 477 in their 1st innings with most of their main batsmen getting some good runs on the board.

The England bowlers and the team as a whole look more fired up and hungry for the win than Australia and its rare you can say that.
You wonder if it just may be the end of the cycle for this present Aussie side, guys getting long in the tooth and time for a change.

A day at the cricket

Had a good day today when I went with friends Anil and Nadim to watch a match at Lord’s, the home cricket.

It was the tsunami relief game between two allstar teams, MCC v International XI, featuring some of the best known players in the world.
Lord’s is a great place to watch a game, not as big as it looks on tv, good views from just about everywhere and easy access from the seats to the concession areas, although this is where they make their money, £3 for a Fosters, £8 fish and chips. Taking a cool box …

Top score

Well done to Brian Lara for hitting a world record 400 not out in the 4th Test against England, just a pity he did it when the series was already lost.

Lara’s got great talent, but it seems over the past few years he can’t deliver when the big games are on the line.
Up against his comtemporaries of the last decade, you’d always pick Tendulkar or Steve Waugh to come through with a game winning knock.

And I know the West Indies are struggling for players but Lara doesn’t do himself any favours by captaining the side as well, he needs …

The party’s over for the Boks

South Africa, the hosts of the Cricket World Cup, are out and there’s still about three weeks to go. That’s got to be a massive downer for the tournament down there.
They had to beat Sri Lanka today to ensure qualifying from their group but heavy rain washed the game out and it was declared a tie. Not wanted at your own party, South Africa going out gets rid of one of the favourites and makes an Aussie repeat look even more likely.

BOWLED WARNIE

warne.jpg

Looks like we won’t be hearing that shout from behind the wicket for a while.
The Cricket World Cup has been more about off field decisions than the actual play today, first Australia’s Shane Warne, one of the best spin bowlers of all time and one of the biggest characters in the game failed a drug test for a banned substance, then England finally pulled out of their opening game in Zimbabwe.

The loss of Warne will probably be felt more by the fans watching than the Australian team, who …

The Ashes

How good was the cricket yesterday. England v Australia, down to the last ball of the fifth day of the Third Test, England needing to take the last Aussie wicket to win but just couldn’t do it.
Fantastic game especially after the incredible end to the Second Test the previous sunday when it came down to Australia needing two runs to win and England needing one more wicket, England got it.

Even people who don’t like the game are getting excited by this Ashes series, 20,000 people were locked out of Old Trafford yesterday when admission was first come, first …

How to spoil a good day out

Cricket authorities are banning fans from bringing booze into Test match grounds. Well done, how take a lot of fun out of the day for fans that are in the ground from 10am to 7pm.

The last time I went to a game at the Oval I took a cooler full of cold beer and drinks, which lasted the day just right and nobody got agressive or out of line.

The England v West Indies Test at Lords last week was criticised for lack of atmosphere compared to when the West Indies fans were allowed to bring instruments in.
It seems to …

Ten pints and six popadums

Watching some cricket highlights of England’s second Test match against Bangladesh in Chittagong, I saw one of the cross of St George flags that the travelling England fans always drape over the pitch side fences had painted on it, Booze Boys On Tour.

Not much chance of an all day piss up when you’re touring muslim Bangladesh I would have thought.

All or Nothing

England fell apart tonight, losing badly to India in the Cricket World Cup. This leaves them with one game to play, against Australia on Sunday, and they’ll probably have to win that game to go through to the next round. Even a victory won’t guarantee they progress. Pakistan, with two games left including one against India on Saturday, could still scrap in.

The boycott of the earlier game in Zimbabwe looks like it could really cost England, but at least they didn’t have to meet Robert Mugabe who’s been schmoozing with Jacques Chirac in Paris while the population back …

2003 Cricket World Cup…But this is

Cricket. Yes the 2003 Cricket World Cup starts tomorrow in South Africa, 14 teams playing 54 games in 43 days. It kicks off with the hosts South Africa playing the West Indies in Cape Town, in the first of these 50-over a side, one-day games and though I don’t watch a whole lot of cricket, I’m definitely up for this World Cup.
