led.jpgLegendary rock band Led Zeppelin have announced they’re reforming for a one off concert at London’s O2 Arena as a tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records who signed the band in 1968 and who died late last year. (He also co-founded the New York Cosmos football team, see the film Once In A Lifetime).

The O2 gig will be on 26 November and Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini will also play on the night.

I Love London film competition

ilovelondon.jpgFilmaka.com, an online network for undiscovered filmmakers, and LoveFiLM.com the online dvd rental service are holding a short film competition under the title I Love London that’s open to anyone to enter.

Films in the competition must be a maximum of five minutes long and on the theme of I Love London. They say as long as London is the central thread of the story, you can make it anywhere in the world, in any language but add subtitles if its not in English.

The Yanks maybe coming

american.jpgA survey by the Travelocity website in the US has found that despite rising international airfares London is still in the top four destination choices for single people over the upcoming US Labor Day holiday on 3 September.

The other cities in the singles top four where Atlanta, Minneapolis and Detroit (lots of out of state Tigers fans?). Its a shame Labor Day doesn’t coincide with this weekend because London has the Notting Hill Carnival taking over the streets of west London for two days with anything up to a million people coming out to party.

Review into travel to London’s sports stadiums

tube.jpgThe London Assembly has launched an investigation and consultation into the travel arrangements in place for sports fans travelling to events in London. According to the Assembly around 250,000 people go to sports stadiums in London on an average autumn weekend but there’s no one in charge of actually making sure that adequate transport is available to move them around.

As part of this review they want to hear the fans stories of travelling to football, rugby, cricket and tennis matches in the capital and what could be done to improve them.

When WC=Art

pod.jpgOne of the most unique public toilets in London is set to have its grand opening at 2pm today, 14 September. The ARTSHED is a £52,000 bespoke toilet jointly funded by Westminster Council and the charity Soho Green that will be used by children, the disabled and the elderly.

Its was craned into position in St Anne’s Garden off of Wardour Street in April of 2007, and since then the structure designed by architect Steve Johnson has been awaiting the photographs and artefacts taken and collected by artist Elaine Duigenan which will be encased in the ARTSHED’s interior transparent walls, making it one of the smallest galleries in London.

Ups and downs of London this week

lon.jpgIf you’re on a trip to London in the next week or so there’s some good and bad things that might effect your stay. Good, the weather has picked up after a pretty crappy August, its been warm with bright sunshine for the last couple of days and the forecast for the coming week is its set to continue with temperatures around the lows 70sF, its not cold at night either.

Also good is the London Underground is back to normal after the strike but things could turn bad again as the union has another three day walkout planned for next Monday.

Heathrow a little behind schedule

heathrow.jpgAh, Heathrow Airport you have to love it. Crowded, chaotic, baggage being lost left, right and centre, climate change protesters camped out of the perimeter and planning to disrupt operations this weekend and a story in the Evening Standard today that every flight leaving this past Wednesday morning went out late. Amazingly British Airways own figures show that only 29% of its flights leave on time.

BAA (British Airports Authority) blamed everthing from high winds to late passengers and overcrowding in the terminals.

New cycle scheme for London?

velib.jpgTransport for London(TfL) is looking at options for starting a bicycle hire scheme similar to the one that Paris began this year called Velib (Freedom bike).

Velib has 10,000 bicycles at 750 dedicated hire points every 300 metres around Paris, with plans for 20,000 bikes at 1,400 hire points by the end of the year. The bikes are available at any time of the day or night and cost just about £0.70 to hire for half an hour. Its claimed theft is minimal because of the design of the bikes, highly secure parking facilities and because payment is via credit or debit card.
