Could you have claim to be the real King or Queen of England? English Heritage thinks somebody might and is asking any potential claimants to send in the genealogy they have so that English Heritage’s panel of genealogists and historians can assess the claim.
The search is all tied in with the opening of a new visitor centre at Battle Abbey, built by William The Conqueror in 1070 after he invaded England and defeated King Harold in 1066. England’s King, Edward The Confessor, had died in January 1066, and three people had claims on the throne. Edgar the Aetheling was the rightful heir but he was only ten years old, so the Saxon Harold Godwinson became King but faced a challenge from the Duke of Normandy(William).
English Heritage are looking for people anywhere in the world who think they can trace their ancestor’s to Edgar the Aetheling, not an easy thing to do, although somewhere out there someone must have a legitimate claim. So if you have a spare few months, start talking to your granny and all those relatives you haven’t seen for years, work on that family tree and maybe you can come to England and regain what’s rightfully yours. Its not a bad gig, palaces, castles, three hot meals a day and all the posh totty you can handle.
