The Mayor of London says TfL (Transport for London) will start a consultation this week on the plans to charge SUV’s, 4×4s and luxury cars £25($50!) a day to drive into the central London Congestion Zone. People living in the zone who own one of these types of vehicle would also lose their resident discount. Not good news if you drive into that part of London regularly in a Range Rover, BMW X5, Mercedes or something similar.
The price structure of the Congestion Zone will be as follows.
£25 - Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) Band G and equivalent vehicles that emit more than 225g CO2 per km.
£8 - Vehicles in VED Bands C, D, E and those in F with emissions up to 225g CO2 per km.
£0 - Vehicles in VED Bands A and B that emit up to 120g CO2 per km which also meet Euro 4 air quality standard (whatever that is).
So that’s a yearly charge of £9,125 if you live in the zone and want to use one of the Band G cars. A lot of money but there are plenty of wealthly people in Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea who I think will say screw it I’m not changing my car, and just pay the increased charge. The consultation on it runs until 19 October 2007.
