2012

So London has won the bid for the 2012 Olympics. I’m still not convinced.
Of course London can put on a great games but I just don’t believe they’ll be able to bring it in on the budget they’ve set. Look at the Millenium Dome and the new Wembley, both costing way more than estimated, and I still haven’t heard anyone say what they intend to do with an 80,000 seat stadium when the Olympics are over.
They won’t be playing football or rubgy league there, Wembley and Arsenal’s new stadium both open in 2006 and big rugby union games are played at Twickenham. I don’t know what they plan to use it for on a regular basis.

On actually winning the bid I couldn’t believe how the media immediately started praising David Beckham for pulling it out of the hat.
I was listening to BBC radio when the result was announced and within ten minutes their reporter in Singapore said she was in a scrum surrounding Beckham and she asked him ‘how important do you feel you’ve been in swinging the vote for London’, ‘hopefully massively’ he said.

Give me a bloody break, he showed up in Singapore with his silly wife yesterday, posed for a few photos, gave one of his ‘er..er..you know..er…you know..’press conferences and this afternoon every radio and newspaperman I heard speaking on the result said Beckham swung it.
The press in this country seem to be fighting to see who can crawl the furthest up Beckham’s backside. I’m sick of the sight of the guy and his desperate old lady, Live8 on saturday, Singapore tuesday, anywhere to get their picture taken.
They’d turn up to the opening of a paper bag if they thought enough photographers where around.

I just wanted to let the people of London know that Americans care deeply about them and grieving as well. In the dead of night, I blogged about it… The post, at SeattleBlogger.com, is titled, “We are all Londoners!”

Greetings from New York City — although I’m solidly anti-Bush, (…at least Blair is articulate and intelligent…) I wish to express my disgust at all terrorist acts everywhere. Violent extremists who attack innocent people without warning are assholes–period. New Yorkers are totally linked and joined in solidarity against violence with our British sisters and brothers. –Greg Burrows

Thanks for the comments guys, I think after the Madrid train attack people here were expecting something to happen, but its still a big shock when it hits something that normal people have to use every day like the bus and tube.
Hopefully its a one off, personally I’m lucky not to have to use the underground on a regular basis but I feel real sorry for the folks that do.
That ‘is it my turn today’ thought is now going to be in the back of their minds and it shouldn’t be like that when you’re just trying to get to work.

Just wanted to say, I was both astonished and pleased when I heard London got the Olympics. I am German and have been living near London for about three month. It’s a nice, big city, international flair. I liked it.

Concerning the stadium, I read they want to build it down for 25,000 seats after the Olympic Games.

bye bye
