Since 9/11 there's been some discussion here about introducing id cards. There’s no complusory photo id in Britain, you could go through your whole life without having something with a picture on it to prove who you are.
My original driving licence is about A4 size, with a name and address on it and lasts for 50 years. Cool.
Now the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, wants to make everybody pay £40 for a picture id with all sorts of data on it.
Maybe a good move with all the terrorist activity, crime, illegal immigration etc, but what’s the point when they’re not going to be complusory for people to carry.
The police pull you over and say ‘would you mind coming down to the station on Friday to prove you’re who you say you are’. It’s not going to work, but £40 x 40million+ people is a nice earner .
