There’s a report in The Times today about how London’s airports, Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted could have huge backlogs of travellers this weekend and next week as people start the Christmas holiday getaway. There was chaos in the summer after the extra security checks were brought in to deal with the liquids on planes situation.
Half a million passengers are due to go through Heathrow this weekend and 194,000 are scheduled for next Friday. BAA (British Airports Authority) doesn’t have all the new security personnel in place it said it would have, in fact less than half and they’re warning airlines that passengers will have big delays going through security checks. They’re putting up the marquees they used in the summer for the overflow of people waiting to get checked, standing in a tent in a Heathrow car park for a couple of hours is not the ideal start to a holiday especially in December.
Here’s the latest travel advice from the BAA website, one small carry on bag, liquids but only in 100ml bottles or smaller. Last week there was a warning to Londoners to secure their homes for Christmas because that time of year was one of the biggest for burglaries, the police were estimating over a third of people living in London left the city for Christmas. A good proportion will be flying somewhere so the best advice is get to the airport as early as you can, especially the closer it gets to next weekend.
