The cult of celebrity taken to its ultimate. The National Portrait Gallery in London has just unveiled its latest work, an hour long film of David Beckham sleeping.
If you live in Britain and engage any type of media you can’t get away from Beckham and his wife’s slavish chasing of attention.
They’d sell exclusive photos of her giving birth if they thought it would keep up their profile.
She’s a singer who can’t sing and he’s an above average footballer, who together through some serious marketing have made some a lot of money from the image they’ve created, but I’ve got absolutely no interest in going to see what the Director of the National Gallery calls ‘compelling’.

Four words to back Mary up, “Tenderness” by General Public.
And besides O’Neill, don’t you like taking pictures of people when they are half asleep –half waking up?
It’s what I’ve always wanted — a chance to luck up Becks’ nose!
Tenderness is not what I had in mind here, Jen. In the case of an infant, yes. But an hour long of a celebrity who doesn’t need the money or the attention. That would compel me to get a life.
Fair enough, Mary. We just got our messages crossed. I was taking a tangent from the post –when i read your words about seeing someone sleeping the first thing i thought of was a song called Tenderness from the 80s. I didn’t mean the actual definition of the word, for some reason your words just reminded me of that song. Not a big deal.
My education is 80s music needs improvement. Got it!
Ah, Chris, looking at someone sleeping can be compelling - perhaps enough to change one’s life, begin travelling, change one’s job, start a business, learn a language…
