London’s mayoral elections take place next year and the current mayor Ken Livingstone is running for a third term, in fact he’s been talking today about getting elected for a fourth time and remaining mayor until at least 2016.
He says that the best way for him to ensure this is to make the 2012 Olympics a success. He then makes an incredible statement about London getting the Olympics in 2005 when he says, ‘we didn’t bid for the Olympic Games because I liked sport, I have never been to a sports event in my life. The nearest I get to sport is a rowdy Labour party conference.’
He’s 62 years old, doesn’t like sport and has never been to a sports event in his life, I’m sure the IOC are delighted to hear that. Unfortunately Livingstone’s probably a shoe-in to get re-elected, he’s the official Labour party candidate and people in London tend to stick blindly to one party, they could run a monkey (some say they do) and still get it elected.
One possible challenger to Red Ken is Right Said Fred singer Richard Fairbrass who says he wants to run as an independent candidate in 2008 and is particularly fed up with the congestion charge. If he’s going to have any chance he needs to start his election campaign with the re-release of I’m Too Sexy and maybe challenge the mayor to a dance off.
