Media and Press

by Chris

London is one of the world’s media centres and if you don’t want to know what’s in the news you almost have to make an effort to avoid hearing or reading it. Britain has ten national daily broadsheet and tabloid newspapers, most produced in the London area and the capital also has its own daily evening paper. Along with these there’s a whole range of specialist, niche or ethnic newpapers, magazines covering just about any subject you care to think up, an extensive free press and ready access to a wide range of foreign newspaper and magazine publications.

Britain has a publically funded national tv and radio broadcaster in the BBC which has two terrestial tv channels, five national radio stations, many more local ones and a whole range of tv and radio stations available digitally. There are three commercial terrestial tv networks available and Sky, Setanta, and VirginMedia offer cable and satellite tv packages. Tuning in your radio you’ll come across numerous stations up and down the FM, AM and LW dial covering news, sport and every kind of music. There’s also a ‘healthy’ pirate radio culture in London where you can hear the newest urban sounds in their embryonic stages.
