A new take on the ‘66 World Cup Final

wemb.jpgFootball and art come together for a new project by New York artist Paul Pfeiffer. Called The Saints it presents the 1966 World Cup Final between England and West Germany in a unique way.

Set in a large disused warehouse close to the new Wembley Stadium, Pfeiffer uses video and sound to put the focus on the crowd for the match. A large number of speakers replay the soundtrack from the ‘66 final with the crowd singing, chanting and cheering, but he also mixes this with the sounds of a modern day crowd of Filipinos brought together in Manila and filmed watching a re-run of the game.

On video screens in cubicles in the warehouse the game is shown on one screen and the Filipinos on the other, only Pfeiffer has digitally erased all but one of the 22 players leaving a lone player seemingly running randomly around the pitch.

On until 28 October 2007, The Saints is open 11am-7pm Wed-Sun and admission is free. It’s located at The Junction, Engineers Way, Wembley HA9 0PB (Map) about 200 metres from Wembley Stadium. The nearest Underground station is Wembley Park.
