On going at the moment at the South Bank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall is the 6th annual Ether festival of experimental music. As you might expect from this kind of festival the acts are not household names, here are some of the performances still to come before the festival finishes on 19th March.
9 March - Tunng plus support Tunng describe their music as experimental folk and electronica and have released two albums so far, Comments of the Inner Chorus and mother’s daughter and other songs. Their show starts at 7.45pm in the Purcell Room and tickets are £13.
9 March - Fulborn Teversham Creating intimate and thrilling improvisational punk jazz chamber music for the future, or so it says. If that sounds like your thing Fulborn Teversham are playing in the Front Room at 5.15pm and admission is free.
10 March - Mira Calix plus support Gong Gong Abstract ambience with folk music fashioned from broken beats. 8pm in the Purcell Room, tickets are £10.
12 March - Battles The promotional write up says ‘be prepared to be blown away by what much of the music press have unanimously agreed to be one of the best live bands walking this earth today.’ It’ll cost you £12.50 to find out if they’re right, 9pm in the Purcell Room.
18 March - Human Beatbox Convention 2007 If you’ve ever heard human beatboxers and thought I could do that, now’s your chance. A day of workshops, seminars and an open mic spot alongside some of the top beatboxers. Starts at 2pm and admission is free.
Its followed at 8pm by Shlomo and the Vocal Orchestra featuring the world’s first human beatbox choir. Tickets afor that are £13.
18 March - Coldcut - A Tribute to Robert Anton Wilson I don’t know who Robert Anton Wilson is/was but this is promised to be a spectacular show by the well known British electronic group. Tickets £15, 7.45pm start.
19 March - Blixa Bargeld Rede/Speech ‘Boris Wilsdorf controls the distortions and develops opposite the stage whilst Blixa Bargeld produces complex sound textures from a simple sentence.’ Not much I can add to that except a few Stellas might help. Starts at 7.45pm, tickets are £20.
