The fifth annual Bankside Frost Fair takes place this weekend, 14-16 December, along the south bank of the River Thames outside of Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Its a celebration of the frost fairs of hundreds of years ago when the river used to freeze over in winter, the very first frost fair taking place exactly 400 years ago in 1607.
The fair will feature over 70 market stalls selling seasonal items, ice sculptures, husky dogs, festive music, street theatre and street entertainers, Christmas food including hog roasts and mulled wine, a lantern parade on the river on Friday evening and a display of livery men on their boats on Saturday.
The fair is free to attend and last year well over 100,000 people turned up so expect a big crowd to be in the area this Friday to Sunday. Frost Fair is open 11am-9pm Fri, 10am-9pm Sat, 10am-6pm Sun. Tate Modern is located between Southwark and Blackfriars Bridges. Map
