BFI Imax London

imax.jpg The largest cinema screen in the UK is the BFI (British Film Institute) Imax located on the Waterloo Road just as you come off the Waterloo Bridge on the south side of the River Thames.

The screen is 20m high and 26m wide and the auditorium has stadium style seats for 477 and the whole thing was paid for with a £15million grant from the National Lottery Fund. The BFI opened it in 1999.
The Imax is in the middle of a large traffic island close to Waterloo Station and rather than risk your life running across the busy road, use the subways that are around the area. There’s one right outside Waterloo Station and other’s including one on the east side of Waterloo Road.
At night the Imax is illuminated which would certainly brighten up that part of south London.

The IMAX shows specially made 3D movies such as Deep Sea 3D and Space Station 3D plus special 3D versions of popular movies like The Polar Express and Superman Returns.

Tickets for the normal IMAX movies are £8.50, £12 for regular films like Superman. There’s a mix of shows during the day with the first showing starting around lunchtime and the last one beginning about 8.30pm. To get there either walk across Waterloo Bridge from the Covent Garden area or take the Bakerloo or Northern Lines to Waterloo Station and you can’t miss it.
