As part of the anniversary of the 1807 Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade Act an exhibition called Dark Heritage is touring the UK, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council England, and is coming to the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich from the 15 May-17 June.
The centre piece of Dark Heritage is a sonic art installation called The Dark, which is described as ‘a pitch black space where a powerful and dramatic three dimensional soundscape immerses you in a story set in the dark days of the 18th century when British ships and British finance controlled the global slave trade. In The Dark your eyes are no use to you, instead, you will need to rely on your ears, your imagination and your courage to find your way through the narrative. The resulting experience is a stimulating mixture of the exciting, the challenging and the scary, and an encounter with our heritage that dramatically illuminates a particularly harrowing aspect of the slave trade.’
Dark Heritage also features activities and workshops and is free to enter. Its open to the public from 10am-5pm on weekends, weekdays are for schools and community groups. Its located in the Pepys Courtyard of the Old Royal Naval College, in the grounds of the Visitor Centre. Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich on the Docklands Light Railway is the nearest station.
