dw.jpgOne of the newest visitor attractions in Southeast England is Dickens World at Chatham in Kent which opened in May 2007. Its a £62 million indoor theme park complex based around the life, times and stories of one of Britain’s greatest authors Charles Dickens.

Dickens World is at Chatham Maritime in Kent close to the town of Rochester, about 30 miles to the southeast of central London and the area where Charles Dickens spent his childhood, Dickens’ father used to work at the Royal Naval Dockyard there.

The centre includes mockups and recreations of Victorian buildings with atmospheric cobbled streets, alleys, courtyards, shops and a dockside, along with costumed characters, shop keepers and street entertainers. It has Europe’s largest themed dark boat ride, taking visitors through London’s sewers, across the city and over the rooftops. Other attractions include the Haunted House of Ebenezer Scrooge, Fagin’s Den for children to play in, Peggoty’s Boat House, The School Room featuring The Dreaded Disciplines of Victorian Education, Crime and Punishment, The Old Curiosity Shoppe, a 4D high definition show and a state-of-the art animatronic show. Over the Christmas period all the attractions will be converted into a Dickens winter wonderland where characters such as The Spirit of Christmas, JackFrost and Scrooge will come to life.

Dickens World is open daily from 10am-5.30pm, tickets are £12.50 adults, £7.50 for children aged 5-15, under 5s are free. Trains for Chatham run from Charing Cross, London Bridge or Victoria and Dickens World is about 1 mile from Chatham Station. Shuttle buses run every ten minutes and cost £1 for the round trip. If you’re driving from central London the A2 road from just south of Tower Bridge will take you pretty much all the way into Rochester and Chatham. Map

I have been Social Organiser for Ilford Probus Club for 5 years. And we have had some very good Outings. But the response I have received this last two weeks, makes me send you this E/mail to say thank you & all at Dickens World. We had a super day. Its not often I manage to satisfy a party of 50 as I did this time. Good Luck All the Best for the Future.

I am intending to bring a party of about 20-30 members of the Surrey Retirement Group on our annual outing on Thursday, 15th May. Do we need to book in advance or is it OK just to turn up on the day? Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you
