The Natural History Museum is teaming up with the British Antarctic Survey to open a new interactive exhibition this week called Ice Station Antarctica, which gives visitors the chance find out what its like to live and work in the Antarctic and also highlights of the UK’s involvement in International Polar Year (2007/8).

Ice Station Antarctica is a series of mini-environments that let you get out in the field and experience camping in a tent, where scientists have to melt ice for cooking and washing, and use basic toilet facilities for days on end, try the sights and smells of working in a penguin colony, glimpse the 24-hour darkness winter residents have to cope with, try walking in multiple layers of special Antarctic clothing and use a snowmobile.

The exhibition runs from 25 May 2007-6 April 2008 and is open from 10am-5.50pm with tickets costing £7. South Kensington is the nearest Underground station.
