Fourth Plinth Exhibition at the National Gallery

poster.jpgThe National Gallery opens a new exhibition on Tuesday, 8 January, featuring works by the six artists who have been selected as candidates to have their work displayed on Trafalgar Square’s famous Fourth Plinth.

The plinth is in the northwest corner of the Trafalgar Square just below the National Gallery itself and unlike its sister plinths in the area it has remained empty since it was built in 1841. Down the years there’s been much discussion about what should be installed there, from statues of famous generals to one of Nelson Mandela.

Since 1998 there’s been a rolling programme of new art commissions that have been picked to temporarily occupy the plinth and this year the six shortlisted artists are Jeremy Deller, Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Yinka Shonibare and Bob & Roberta Smith. Models of their work will be on display at the National Gallery’s Annenberg Court from 8 January-30 March 2008 and the public are invited to give their opinions on the short listed art with the winner announced by the Mayor of London later this spring.

The National Gallery is open daily from 10am-6pm (9pm Wed) and admission is free although there is a charge for some major temporary exhibitions. Map

In Ho Chi Minh City (former Saigon), Vietnam’s dynamic commercial center, explore colorful produce markets, or perhaps stop in a designer shop to order a haute couture ao dai . Take a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels and watch an unusual, eclectic religious ceremony at the main temple of Cao Daism, a unique fusion of world religions.
