Guide to England’s music history

There’s a new website started that helps music fans track down locations of historical interest in the story of rock and pop over the last forty or so years in England. Called England Rocks the site has a menu and interactice map that lets you find the sites of famous venues, homes, recording studios, album cover settings, video shoots and even a few places where rock stars met untimely deaths.

The menu is designed like the ones in a jukebox machine, click on the left or right blue bar and the list will flip over or back. Among the London sites listed are venues such as the 100 Club and Brixton Academy, the Hope and Anchor pub in Islington where U2, The Stranglers and Joy Division played their first London gigs and The Roundhouse in Camden Town where Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others all played.

You can also find where Hendrix, Bob Marley and Freddie Mercury lived in London, the places around town used in album covers for The Beatles, Oasis, Pink Floyd and Madness and the place where Marc Bolan of T-Rex killed himself when he smashed his car into a tree.
