Julie Christie was one of the most iconic actresses of the 1960s and starting tomorrow the BFI(British Film Institute) Southbank is showing a month long season of her films.
Julie Christie was born in India and grew up on a tea plantation before coming to England and France to study, she’s fluent in French and Italian. She was considered for the Ursula Andress role in Dr No before getting her break a year later in Billy Liar and winning an Oscar in 1965 for the film Darling. Her most well known film is probably Dr Zhivago and after living with Warren Beatty for the best part of a decade she stopped taking headline roles.
The BFI is showing 14 of her films at various times during May with some getting a lot more screenings than others. Here are the films in the season.
Afterglow Christie was nominated for an Oscar in this 1997 film also starring Nick Nolte and Lara Flynn Boyle.
Billy Liar John Schlesinger directs this 1963 film about a young guy in Yorkshire with Walter Mitty style dreams and three girlfriends on the go.
Darling The 1965 film also directed by Schlesinger that won Christie her Oscar, co-starring Laurence Harvey.
Doctor Zhivago David Lean’s lavish film set during the Russian Revolution and also starring Omar Sharif, Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness and Tom Courtenay. Christie looks gorgeous in it.
Don’t Look Now A 1973 horror/thriller directed by Nick Roeg and co-starring Donald Sutherland.
Far from the Madding Crowd John Schlesinger’s film of the Thomas Hardy novel about three men fighting for the attention of one woman. Terence Stamp, Peter Finch and Alan Bates are the ones after Christie.
The Go-Between 1970 film about young lovers fighting the English class systemin Victorian England.
The Gold Diggers Little known black and white film from 1983.
Hamlet Kenneth Branagh’s 1996 version with the all-star cast including Richard Attenborough, Billy Crystal, Judi Dench, Gérard Depardieu, John Gielgud, Charlton Heston, Jack Lemmon, Robin Williams, Kate Winslet and Christie among others.
Heat and Dust James Ivory directed this 1982 film, set in India over a period of 60 years.
McCabe & Mrs Miller Robert Altman’s western about a new arrival in a Pacific Northwest town setting up a brothel with a madam. Warren Beatty stars with Julie Christie.
Miss Mary A 1982 film about an English governess hired by a family in pre-Peron Argentina.
Petulia Richard Lester’s 1968 film looks at the changing values of the 60s.
Shampoo Warren Beatty’s celebrity hairdresser works his way through Christie, Goldie Hawn, Carrie Fisher and Lee Grant.
The BFI’s Julie Christie season runs from 4-31 May and tickets for the films are £8.60.
