London ANZAC Sports Challenge

There’s a big sporting contest in London tomorrow between two close neighbours and fierce opponents on the sports field. This one’s not the Tottenham v Arsenal Premiership derby taking place at lunchtime on Saturday, but the 2007 ANZAC Sports Challenge, a day of competition between Australians and New Zealanders living in the UK in the week of ANZAC Day which commemorates both Australian and New Zealand war dead.

The event is being held in Twyford Park in Acton, West London and features Australian and New Zealand teams taking part in eight different sports.
Rugby Union The London New Zealand Rugby Football Club will play an invitation Maori Wanderers XV. The Maoris won last year so the LNZRFC will be looking for a chance to get even.
Aussie Rules Ten teams of ex-pats will contest the BARFL Anzac Cup, won last year by the West London Wildcats.
Rugby League An Australian Select team will play a New Zealand Select team for the inaugural Rugby League ANZAC Cup.
Netball There’s both a womens and a mixed team competition between Aussies and Kiwis for the 4th Netball ANZAC Cup.
Touch Rugby There are three competitons for the Touch Rugby Anzac Cup, mens, womens and mixed.
Football The first Soccer Anzac cup will be between an Australia Select XI and a New Zealand Select XI.
Women’s AFL The first ever full contact womens AFL match in London, places are still open for brawny birds who can kick.
AFL Rugby A hybrid match that’s going to be non-contact and played under the rules of Touch Aussie Rules.

Throughout the day they’ll also be DJ’s and groups playing on stages and in marquees as well as performances by Beats of Polynesia doing traditional dances. The on field action lasts from 10am-6pm and there’s an After Party which runs from 6.30pm-10pm in the main marquee.

Tickets are £10 and Twyford Park is on Twyford Avenue in Acton. Ealing Common and Acton Town are the nearest Underground stations and are both about a 10 minute walk away.
