The fifth annual London Mela takes place in Gunnersbury Park west London this Sunday 12 August. Mela comes from the sanskrit words ‘to meet’ and this Mela is a meeting of the best in traditional and classical South Asian music and dance, as well as contemporary British Asian urban music, dance, comedy, cabaret, Asian influenced street theatre and circus.
London Mela is free to enter and crowds of up to 100,000 are expected to attend. It runs from 12 noon to 9.30pm and acts are split between seven stages and tents. The Main Stage with the headline performers, the Magic Mela an interactive area for kids, Indo Electronica where some of the Asian worlds greatest classical musicians will use laptops, sythesisers and machines to create a unique Indo Electronica sound. The Heritage Maidaan and Classical tent features classical dance, music, films and exhibitions, London Flavas brings the best British Asian DJs, MCs and urban music acts together for non-stop performances all day, Community Cabaret has everything from a Bollywood Brass Band to tabla players, Punjabi folklore dancing and Bollywood fusion dancers, while the BBC Asian Network Mix Tent features some of the top DJs from the BBCs radio networks.
Gunnersbury Park is between Acton and Ealing in west London, bordered on the south by the M4 motorway but you’re advised not to drive there for the Mela because of the expected crowds. The nearest Tube stations are Acton Town, South Ealing and Gunnersbury. Map
