rg1.jpgWith the nights staying lighter for longer (till around 8pm at the moment) and the weather getting warmer, people are starting to think of eating alfresco, bbq’s and generally spending more time outside in the evenings. One of London’s long standing traditions in the summer months is the Regents Park Open Air Theatre, which is having its 75th season of productions this year and for which tickets are now available to book for its 15 week summer run.

The Open Air Theatre is in a lovely spot in Queen Mary’s Gardens in the centre of Regents Park. Its home to the UK’s oldest professional theatre company, known for their productions of Shakespeare but also staging musicals and children’s plays. The outdoor auditorium holds 1200, who can picnic in the theatre grounds 90 minutes before the performances start or eat from the theatre’s own bbq. Drinking is allowed and there’s a bar that’s open until midnight.

This years season starts on 28th May and the programme from then until September includes productions of Macbeth 28 May-16 Aug, A Midsummer Night’s Dream 30 May-18 Aug and the musicals Lady Be Good by George and Ira Gershwin 17 July-25 Aug, Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox 31 July-25 Aug and The Boy Friend 28 Aug-15 Sept. There are also Sunday evening gigs by comedians such as Ed Byrne and Jimmy Carr.

There are shows on virtually every day until 15 September and many have matinee performances as well. Ticket prices range from £10-£33, all tickets for Fantastic Mr Fox are £12.
