London Theatre has record breaking year

London’s West End theatre district had it best year for revenue in 2006 according to the Society of London Theatre, which said tickets sales where over £400million for the first time and over 12.3 million tickets where bought.

Apparently the opening of some big new shows late in the year such as Dirty Dancing, Wicked the Tony and Grammy award winning Broadway show, Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Sound of Music which was helped by its lead star being found by reality tv, all boosted ticket sales.

The Society of London Theatre are still running their GILT(Get Into London Theatre) campaign until 17 March with discounted tickets of between £10-£35, £10-£15 for 16-24 year olds.

Some shows that you might want to catch in the next few weeks include Guys and Dolls with Don Johnson(aka Sonny Crockett) taking over the Nathan Detroit role from Patrick Swazye at the Piccadilly Theatre, the highly rated Frost/Nixon about the interviews the famous journalist did with the ex-President in the 1970s (on its last few performances with a movie in the works) and Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Royal Court Theatre starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Mackenzie Crook(Gareth from The Office and Pirates of the Caribbean).

You can buy tickets online, from the theatre box offices which usually open around 10am, from the tkts booth on the south side of Leicester Square open from 10am-7pm or else use the various ticket agencies you’ll see throughout the West End.
