London’s got Soul


soul1.jpgThe Barbican Arts Centre in the City of London is having a three day festival called Soul Britannia celebrating the impact of black and soul music on the UK over the last 50 years.

The event starts at 7.30pm this Friday 2 February at the Barbican Hall with a concert by The Brand New Heavies along with N’Dea Davenport, Omar, Jazzie B from Soul II Soul, David McAlmont and Carl McIntosh. The Brand New Heavies will play their set and be the band for the other artists. Jazzie B will be DJing a free gig on the Barbican’s Clubstage after the concert.

On Saturday 3 February the festival starts with a free event at 3pm on the Barbican’s Freestage featuring Soothsayers and the Red Earth Collective with Ricky Ranking and Mellow Baku. At 4.15pm at the Barbican’s Cinema 3 there’s a showing of the 1980 movie Babylon, the story of a young Rastafarian MC on the Jamaican dance hall scene in Britain. Tickets £8.50, £7 online.

At 7.30pm there’s a concert at the Barbican Hall by the Soul Britannia Allstars featuring Madeline Bell, Carol Grimes, Hamish Stuart, Linda Lewis, Root Jackson, Gonzalez, Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson. Tickets are £10-£20. The concert’s followed by a free gig at the Clubstage by Dennis Bovell’s HiFi.

The events on Sunday 4 February begin with a free performance at 3pm on the Freestage by Four Kornerz and Marcina Arnold, followed by a showing at Cinema 3 in the Barbican of the 2003 film James Brown: Soul Survivor looking at the life of the Godfather of Soul. It starts at 4.30pm, tickets are £8.50, £7 online.

The festival ends with a concert by the Transatlantic Soul Connection including Geno Washington, Jimmy James, Eric Burdon, Madeline Bell, Eddie Floyd and Sam Moore. Its on at the Barbican Hall from 7.30pm with tickets costing £15-£25.
