Along with Chinese New Year, February is also the time the London Assembly has designated as the start for its China in London season of events. This week the Mayor and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government are launching Shanghai Week starting with a show at City Hall called Shanghai 360 Degrees, a photography exhibition which uses panoramic photos to show off one of the fastest growing and most futuristic cities in the world. The exhibition runs from 12-23 February and is open from 8am–8pm, Mon-Fri, admission is free.
On the website it says its ‘Arranged in association with Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee’ which must sound like music in the ears of a hardline lefty like Ken Livingstone.
Starting this Sunday, 18 February, at the National Film Theatre on the South Bank is a series of Chinese animation films produced by the Shanghai Animation Studio, which first opened in 1957. The films include full length features from the 60s, 80s and 90s as well as three programmes of short films, where individual movies last from 5 minutes to almost 1 hour. The Shanghai Animation on Screen season is on from 18-27 February and tickets cost £7.60 for NFT members, £8.60 non-members, Waterloo is the nearest Underground station.
