The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in Piccadilly is holding a weekend of screenings of current and recent Mexican films under the title BAFTA Goes To Mexico. Most screenings cost £10 for non-BAFTA members, and there are also some Q&A and talks on given by people involved in the Mexican film industry.
BAFTA is located at 195 Piccadilly, London W1J 9LN (Map), about halfway between Green Park and Piccadilly Circus Underground stations. Below is the weekend programme of events.
28 July - My Mexican Shivah This 2006 drama/comedy by director Alejandro Springall is set in Polanco, the Jewish quarter of Mexico City and centres around family and friends gathering for a seven day Jewish mourning ritual. Starts at 12 noon in the Princess Anne Theatre.
28 July - Japon Written and directed by Carlos Reygadas this 2002 film explores the themes of death and rebirth. 2pm in the Princess Anne Theatre.
28 July - Love in the Time of Hysteria A womanizer who’s trying to kill himself after a nurse he cheated on falsely puts positive on his AIDS test meets a woman also trying to kill herself after finding out her boyfriend is having an affair. 4.30pm in the Princess Anne Theatre.
28 July - Behind the Screen: Brigitte Broch Oscar-winning production designer Brigitte Broch (Amores Perros, Babel, and Love in the Time of Hysteria) will give an insight into how her designs can change the landscape of films. £20 with a drinks reception at 6.30pm and the talk at 7pm. 28 July - Amores Perros Nominated for a Best Foreign Language Oscar, Amores Perros recounts three interrelated stories revolving around a car accident. 9pm in the Princess Anne Theatre.
29 July - Santitos A comedy/drama about faith and undying family love. 10am in the Princess Anne Theatre.
29 July - The Devil’s Backbone A horror film about a remote Spanish orphanage where the young inhabitants are brutally terrorized by a decomposing spirit. Guillermo Del Toro directed this 2001 film showing at 12 noon in the Princess Anne Theatre.
29 July - Behind the Lens:A Cinematographer’s Journey - Guillermo Navarro Oscar-winning cinematographer Guillermo Navarro will be in conversation with writer Jason Wood from 2pm in the Princess Anne Theatre, tickets £20, booking is essential.
29 July - El Violin 2005 film about a peasnat farming family involved in a guerrilla movement. 4.30pm in the Princess Anne Theatre, booking is essential, 020 7292 5858 or events@bafta.org.
29 July - In the Limelight:In Conversation with Vanessa Bauche and Adriana Barraza Film critic Anwar Brett will be in conversation with actresses Vanessa Bauche and Adriana Barraza from 6.30pm in the Princess Anne Theatre, booking is essential.
29 July - KM 31 2006 horror/drama about twin sisters with a psychic link. The 8pm showing in the Princess Anne Theatre is followed by a Q&A with actor Raul Mendez. Booking is essential on 020 7292 5858 or email:events@bafta.org.
