Moore at Kew

moore.jpgThe Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in West London are holding a major exhibition of outdoor sculptures by the renowned British artist and sculptor Sir Henry Moore. Moore at Kew features 28 giant sculptures set in Kew’s extensive grounds in an event that will run until 30 March 2008.

Henry Moore died in 1986 aged 88 and was a prolific sculptor producing over 6,000 pieces of work which can be seen in cities all around the world. The ones on show at Kew, some weighing over 21 tonnes, come from the collection of 600 at the Henry Moore Foundation in Perry Green, Hertfordshire.

Setting them in a grassy landscape is how Moore intended them to be seen with the light, weather and tree foliage around them changing through the seasons. The Kew website has a rollover map with the location of each sculpture, its picture and description.

Kew Gardens is open every day from 9.30am-6pm with admission £12.25. Its a World Heritage Site and gets around 1.5 million visitors each year. Entry by the Main Gate or the Victoria Gate are advised if you’re looking for the Moore at Kew exhibition where you can also see an Introductory Exhibition in the Nash Conservatory, and a film about Moore in the Princess of Wales Conservatory.

Kew Gardens station on the District Line is the nearest Underground, that’s also the station for trains from Waterloo. Map
