A new exhibition opened today at the British Library called Sacred:Discover What We Share featuring some of the most important and beautiful Jewish, Christian and Muslim books being displayed together for the first time, including one of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
There are 67 sacred texts in the exhibition, dating from AD50, the Dead Sea Scroll, up to 1900. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are known as the Abrahamic faiths because Abraham features in each of their holy books and this collection looks at the differences and also what the religions have in common. There’s a wider variety of Christian books because Christianity doesn’t require texts to be in one language, as Judaism does with Hebrew and Islam does with Arabic.
Sacred:Discover What We Share is on in the British Library’s Pearson Gallery and admission is free, although you do get a timed ticket which you can book in advance if you want. The British Library is open daily 9.30am-6pm (until 8pm Tues, 5pm Sat), Sun 11am-5pm. Its located on the Euston Road very close to St Pancras station and there’s a lot of other stuff worth seeing inside.
