The National Army Museum in Chelsea opens a unique exhibition tomorrow called HELMAND:The Soldiers’ Story, a look at the experiences of the army fighting in Afghanistan even while thousands of British troops are still involved in the on going Nato mission against the Taliban.
The exhibition is the work of soldiers from the 16 Air Assault Brigade, the first NATO troops to go into Helmand Province in 2006. More than 150 men from the Brigade have provided photographs, footage, personal diaries, letters, emails, personal objects and items collected in Helmand as well as giving written and oral accounts of their time in combat there.
HELMAND also features recreations of the environments in which soldiers live, work and fight in Helmand Province such as accomodation tents, combat outposts, a mortar gun position and an improvised medical outpost. All these structures were built by soldiers from the Royal Engineers, Royal Logistic Corps, and Royal Irish Regiment.
The National Army Museum is open daily from 10am-5.30pm and admission is free. Its located on Royal Hospital Road in Chelsea, Sloane Square is the nearest Underground station. Map
