The three day Notting Hill Carnival takes place towards the end of August filling the streets of that part of west London with hundreds of thousands of people who come to enjoy the music and parades with participants in their fantastic carnival costumes.
This weekend, 18-19 August, the Notting Hill Mas Bands Association are holding an exhibition and preview of this year’s carnival costumes called the Grand Carnival Costume Splash at Alexandra Palace in north London. The Costume Splash will feature carnivalists showing off their dance moves, steelband drumming workshops, costume making and Calypso storytelling, face painting, mask-making and a children’s activity area among other things.
Prizes will be awarded for the Best King of Carnival, Best Queen of Carnival, Best Male Costume and Best Female Costume and the winners will be on show on the Sunday afternoon. Admission to the Grand Carnival Costume Splash costs £10 adults, £6 over 65s and children. Its open from 11am-2.30pm and 3pm-6pm Sat, 3pm-8pm Sun in The Great Hall.
Alexandra Palace is in Wood Green, north London with the nearest train station Alexandra Palace a few minutes away and the closest Tube Wood Green a little further down the hill. Map
