London has a wealth of architecture with some of its newest and most modern buildings sitting next door to others that are hundreds and hundreds of years old, and a lot of the time because of their uses members of the public don’t have access to them to experience the building from the inside as well as out.
Open House is an architecture education charity that every year organizes its Open House London - Architecture in the Flesh weekend where over 600 buildings throughout London with some architectural or design significance open their doors to the public to look around for free. Among the buildings taking part are private residences, galleries, museums, office buildings, banks, universities, sports stadiums and concert halls.
Famous buildings participating this year include Lloyds of London, the Royal Courts of Justice, the Mansion House, the Royal Albert Hall and the Swiss Re building also known as The Gherkin. The Open House website has a full listing along with a map showing where they all are. You can also order a Buildings Guide from there which gives details of all the places open to visit, price £4.
The Open House London weekend takes place on the 15-16 September and is a great chance to go inside places that for the rest of the year are only open to people with business there.
