Tate Britain, the major gallery along the banks of the Thames just south of the Houses of Parliament, is holding its first major photography exhibition next week. Its been the home of historical and contemporary British art but its show How We Are:Photographing Britain will look at the story of photography in Britain from the earliest pioneers up to the cutting edge technology and imagery of today.
The exhibition will include pictures by some of Britain’s most famous photographers as well as ones from family albums, medical photographs, propaganda, social documents and postcards. The Tate is also inviting people to contribute their own photos to the show by uploading them to the How We Are Now Flickr group. The photos you send must be taken in the UK and illustrate one of the four themes of the exhibition: portrait, landscape, still life or documentary. Pictures sent in will be displayed on screens at the Tate Britain exhibition, on the Tate’s website and also the Observer newspaper’s.
How We Are is on from 22 May-2 September 2007 and Tate Britain is open daily from 10am-5.50pm. Tickets for the exhibition are £7.50. Tate Britain is on Millbank in Westminster, just past Lambeth Bridge. Westminster or Pimlico ar the nearest Tubes.
