If you’re into modern contemporary art you might like to get along to London’s ultra trendy White Cube gallery to see the piece on sale for £50million, the highest price asked for a work of art by a living artist.
Its by British artist Damien Hirst, titled For the Love of God and is a 18th century skull covered with 8,601 pave-set diamonds. I have to say most of this modern art stuff goes sailing over my head and while the diamonds must be worth a few million I can’t see why sticking them on a skull makes it suddenly worth fifty million. Damien Hirst is quoted as saying ‘I hope it makes the people who see it feel good, that it’s uplifting, that it takes your breath away.’ Uplifting, makes you feel good, its a cast of some poor bastards skull I don’t think its going to make me feel warm all over.
To see it at White Cube Mason’s Yard you’ll need to book a ticket online, you won’t need one for the rest of the gallery. The exhibition Damien Hirst:Beyond Belief is on from 3 June-7 July, Mason’s Yard is between Piccadilly and Pall Mall, Piccadilly Circus is the nearest Tube.
