Spring is officially here, even if Spring weather isn’t yet, and this is the time of year when London’s Royal Parks start coming into their own as places Londoners and visitors alike can go to relax, play or be entertained.
The Royal Parks comprise much of the public green space in central London and include St James’s Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent’s Park, Greenwich and Richmond Parks. Throughout the year each will have a varied programme of organized events that are open to the public covering areas such as the history, wildlife, horticulture or sports activities in the parks. Below are some of the events you can take part in at the Royal Parks from now until the end of May, all are free to attend.
26 March - Greenwich Park Herald of Spring Guided Walk A walk led by the assistant park manager from 10.30am-12 noon that departs from the notice boards just outside the Park Offices at the Blackheath Gate. No booking required.
27 March - Queen Caroline’s Gardens Guided Walk Taking place in Kensington Gardens which were originally laid out by Queen Caroline in the 1730s, this walk looks at the features she introduced and why. Booking is necessary for this walk which runs from 2pm-3.30pm. Call on 0207 298 2083 or email nlane@royalparks.gsi.gov.uk.
9 April - Hyde Park Hearts First Jog In aid of the British Heart Foundation this event has two options, either a 5km jog (one lap of the park) or 10km (two laps). Starts at 6pm, more details on the British Heart Foundation website.
9 April - St James’s Park Innocent playground or park of shame? A guided walk from 1pm-2pm looking at the darker sides of St James’s Park in Victorian times. Book a place on 020 7930 1793.
11 April - Spring in Hyde Park A guided walk that looks at the seasonal changes taking place in the park. On from 1pm-2.30pm, book on 0207 298 2083.
21 April - St James’s Park Royal Gardeners Guided Walk Two walks take place on the Queen’s birthday, 1pm-2pm and 2.30pm-3.30pm, and look at how royalty has influenced the park’s development of the years. Book a place on 020 7930 1793.
24 April - Spring in Kensington Gardens A guided walk looking at the Spring growth in the park. Runs from 2pm-3.30pm, book a place on 020 7930 1793.
24 April - Every Garden is a Wildlife Garden A guided walk around Regent’s Park looking at wildlife friendly gardening. Starts at 12.30pm, call 020 7935 7430 to book a place.
26 April - Plants, pots and paints Taking place in Regent’s Park’s Community Wildlife Garden, activities include seed planting, making plant pots and a bumblebee trail. Turn up anytime between 11.30am-3.30pm to take part.
8 May - St James’s Park War on Waste Visit the park’s World War 2 allotment from 1pm-2pm and 2.30pm-3.30pm to discover how people who lived through the war made use of their gardens.
9 May - Hyde Park The Great Exhibition A guide walk looking at the Great Exhbition of 1851 which was held in Hyde Park. The walk lasts from 1pm-2.30pm, book a spot on 0207 298 2083.
22 May - St James’s Park Space for Nature This is International Biodiversity Day and the Space for Nature guided walk looks at how St James’s Park is managed for wildlife. On from 1pm-2pm, call on 020 7930 1793.
22 May - Walking With Giants A guide tree walk through Kensington Gardens from 2pm-3.30pm.
28 May - The mansions of Green Park A guide walk looking at the architecture and history of the grand houses surrounding Green Park. Runs from 1pm-2pm, book a place on 020 7930 1793.
28 May - The Gentle Giants of Greenwich Park A tree walk on from 10.30am-12 noon looking at the larger trees in the park. Booking is not required.
