This weekend one of the most well known churches in London, St Martin-in-the-Fields, reopens to the public after a £36 million renewal project aimed at making the church that was built in 1726 able to cope with all the things it’s used for in the 21st century.
St Martins is known as the ‘Church of the Ever Open Door’ and as well as holding regular services in English, Cantonese and Mandarin (its a few hundred yards from Chinatown) it has a popular cafe and concerts in its crypt, and provides social care services to the Chinese community and homeless people.
On Sunday 30 September it will reopen for church services and concerts and on Monday 1 October the Crypt reopens for the Café in the Crypt, Shop in the Crypt and London Brass Rubbing Centre. Pretty much everyday during October except for Sundays there are concerts of some sort on at St Martin’s. The programme includes lunchtime shows which are free and start at 1pm, Concerts by Candlelight that start around 7.30pm and last two hours and similarly Jazz in the Crypt events are usually two hours beginning at 8pm and include a short interval.
St Martin-in-the-Fields is in the northeast corner of Trafalgar Square across from the National Gallery. The nearest Tube is Leicester Square. Map
