This coming Sunday, 2 September, another unique event will join the crowded British sporting calendar when The Great British Duck Race takes place on the River Thames in southwest London.
The race is an attempt to break a world record and raise around £500,000 for charity by sending 165,000 rubber ducks down a 1km stretch of the Thames from Molesey Lock near Hampton Court to the finish line at Albany Reach. Each duck can be individually sponsored online and the first duck over the finish line wins the sponsor a £10,000 cash prize. There are also prizes for the first 30 runners-up.
Ducks cost £2 to adopt and you’re invited to make a donation to charity. The ducks will be put into Molesey Lock at 12noon and released onto the river at 1.30pm with the winner expected to take between 1-2 hours to cover the course depending on the current.
The lock is on the A308 near Hampton Court Bridge, Hampton Court is the nearest station with trains running from Waterloo. Map
