The Long Weekend at Tate Modern

1tate.jpgThe Tate Modern has got together with UBS to stage a series of events under the title The Long Weekend, featuring one off performances in film, music, performance and visual art by celebrated international artists in the Tate’s unique and massive Turbine Hall.

The Long Weekend runs from 25-28 May and more than half the events are free, here’s what’s on the programme/
25 May Mathieu Briand: SYS*011. Mie>AbE/SoS\ SYS*010, aka the Spiral French artist Mathieu Briand turn sthe Turbine Hall into a gigantic sound installation, creating a massive sound recording and performance space. 10am-6pm.
25 May Maya Deren/Ikue Mori Seven experimental films by the experimental filmmaker Maya Deren. Four of these are accompanied live with new, specially commissioned soundtracks by the Japanese musician Ikue Mori. Starts 9pm, tickets £18.
26 May Mathieu Briand: SYS*011. Mie>AbE/SoS\ SYS*010, aka the Spiral Briand’s sculptural environment with open decks and vinyl cut machine features performances from Briand, Charlie Dark, si-cut.db, Sarah Washington, Xentos ‘Fray’ Bentos, The Bug and Radio Active Man. 10am-6pm, free.
26 May What Can The Matter Be? Scientist Mark Miodownik, artist Zoe Laughlin and designer Martin Conreen reveal some of the secrets behind the Tate Modern collection. Takes place in the Starr Auditorium from 2-3pm, free.
26 May Mathieu Briand and Prue Lang Mathieu Briand collaborates with choreographer Prue Lang featuring a unique performance which will involve up to 100 participants performing real-time a series of simple instructions within the natural flow of visitors in the Turbine Hall. Its free and on from 3-4pm.
26 May Throbbing Gristle/Derek Jarman Screenings of Derek Jarman’s rarely seen early experimental super 8 films, made in the 1970s. In the Turbie Hall from 9pm, tickets £18.
27 May Marepe The Brazilian artist known as Marepe uses everyday consumer objects as the material for his sculptures. In the Turbine Hall from 10am-6pm, free.

27 May Sleep:Warhol/Cage/Satie A panel discussion examines the relationship between the work of Andy Warhol, John Cage, and the composer Erik Satie. In the Starr Auditorium between 3-5pm, tickets £10.
27 May Sleep: Warhol/Cage/Satie Andy Warhol’s first film Sleep is screened throughout the night starting at 7.30pm and running until 3pm on the 28th. Ticket holders can drop in and out throughout the night, food and drink is available and you’re invited to bring sleeping bags. Tickets £18.
28 May Oiticica Work by one of the most innovative Brazilian artists of his generation. In the Turbine Hall from 1.30-5pm, free.
28 May Synthesis Ryoichi Kurokawa, Toshimaru Nakamura & Billy Roisz, Sachiko M with Benedict Drew Live audio-visual performances from Japan, Austria and the UK, this programme highlights artists who are exploring the use of feedback, decay, assemblage and kinetics. In the Turbine Hall from 9-11pm, tickets £18.
