Tower Bridge is one of the most famous and recognizable sites in London. Its a bascule bridge that raises and lowers its span to allow larger ships access to the Pool of London area between London and Tower Bridges. You can still see the bridge raising at irregular intervals today, dependent on when shipping needs to get past Tower Bridge. Next week it raises and lowers twice, at 4pm on 13 March when a luxury paddle steamer the MV Dixie Queen passes into the Pool of London and at 9.45am on the 14th March when it comes back down stream.
Also on the 18th March the MV Dixie Queen, which is permanently based next to Butlers Wharf just east of Tower Bridge, will make two trips into the Pool of London and pass under the bridge four times. Here’s the bridge lift schedule until the end of April in case you want to catch it raising and below is a clip of Tower Bridge in action.
