Like most big cities London now has a massive fireworks display to welcome the New Year in, with the London Eye being the main launch site for pyrotechnics. The London Eye is on the south bank of the River Thames, across Westminster Bridge from Big Ben, and the best place to view the action will be from that bridge, along the Victoria Embankment (on the bank opposite the Eye), from Waterloo Bridge further down river or from viewing areas along the south bank.
The police get all barrier and barricade happy at this time of year and in the name of health and safety start making getting about central London a bit of a pain in the ass. Around the London Eye fireworks area they’ll be closing Westminster Bridge to access from the north side from 8pm-1am, Westminster Underground station will also close from 9pm-3am. A little further down stream the two Golden Jubliee foot bridges either side of Charing Cross railway bridge will be closed from 8pm-0.30am and Embankment station will be closed from midnight-3am.
Trafalgar Square, the traditional gathering place for ten thousands of people celebrating New Year’s, is not far from where the fire works will be going off, but where as years ago anyone could walk into the Square with as much booze as they could carry now the police limit the numbers and won’t admit you if you have alcohol with you.
London Underground, London Buses and the Docklands Light Railway will all be operating through the night on New Years Eve but only with a Sunday service. All travel will be free between 11.45pm-4.30am. National Rail trains will be running an amended Sunday service with some extra trains. From 1am-5am some selected routes will be free, its basically the main lines to the London suburbs out of central London. Check with their website or the individual trains operating companies to see if trains to an from your area are going to be free.
