Book Slam An event that started in November 2006 and takes place on the last Thursday of each month, it aims to spice up the book reading format with writers, poets and musicians all contributing to the event at west London’s Neighbourhood club. The UK Wedding Show The place to go if you’re planning for the big day this year. The Wedding Show at ExCel London has exhibitors covering everything you’ll need the special occasion from outfits, catering, flowers, cakes, venues, photographers to the all important honeymoon. London Olympians American Football Tryout The current champions of the British American Football League are looking for new recruits for the up coming season. You don’t need to have played the game before but must be over 18 years of age and probably weigh more than 140 pounds soaking wet. If you feel you have what it takes to pound someone into the ground and also take some big hits, get down to Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Sunday 28 January at 10.30am and let them decide whether you fit the bill.

Matt Mullican under Hypnosis Tate Modern hosts this event where the American artist will create his latest work while hypnotized. Sounds slightly like a piss take, but although apparently he feels his work can be influenced unconsciously by people around him while he’s under. If you want to contribute by whispering ideas into his ear, get along to the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern on Saturday 27 January, starting at 10pm. Tickets cost £6.

Burns Night 25 January is the celebration of the birthday of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, author of Auld Lang Syne among other things. A lot of places will be holding Burns Suppers where Scots get a chance to wear their kilts, eat haggis, neeps and tatties and try a little whisky. A lot of pubs will be having promotions if not a full Burns Supper, check the listings in your local area.
