World Press Photo is an independent, non-profit organization based in the Netherlands which since 1955 has organized the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest. Its open to all professional press photographers with entries being submitted in January each year and the judging taking place in February.
All the prize winning entries are published in a yearbook and are assembled in a travelling exhibition that visits 45 countries. This year’s World Press Photo exhibition arrives in London this weekend for a short stay at the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank. Among the 200 winning pictures for 2007 are ones on the war in Iraq, street dancers in Paris, fans and footballers at the World Cup in Germany, the American Ms Senior Sweetheart Pageant, and the hunting grounds of the Leopard seal.
The exhibition runs from 18 August-9 September and is open from 10am-11pm, admission is free. The Royal Festival Hall is part of the Southbank Centre next to Waterloo Bridge along the River Thames, Waterloo is the nearest Tube. Map
